Basel, Switzerland and Toyama, Japan also celebrate a friendship and exchanges already for the past 18+ years, starting as early as 2006. As early as 2009, Basel-Stadt, Basel-Land and Toyama also concluded agreements for exchanges in pharmaceutical areas. The University of Basel and University of Toyama as well as the University of Basel and Toyama Prefectural University in Japan, also signed a Memorandum of Understanding concerning exchanges of students, faculty members and research.
The Award is connected to contribute to the funding required for Bachelor or Master students of the Pharmaceutical Sciences department, University of Basel, to study and live in Toyama. Hanns-Christian Mahler has a special connection with Japan, grown both during professional trips and family vacations, where he met wonderful colleagues and great friends.
